Dave Chappelle Says Celebrities Left ‘Dirty Notes’ For Trump Staffers

Comedian Dave Chappelle confirmed the existence of the rude notes left for the Trump administration in the White House but claims Obama administration officials are not responsible for them.

What he said: Chappelle addressed the claims during an interview on the “No Filter” show with Naomi Campbell. He claimed he saw celebrities leave notes during a White House party before the end of former President Barack Obama’s term.

“Remember when the Trump administration moved in, they said the Obama staff left dirty notes for us in all the drawers and all the cabinets?” Chappelle said on a new episode of Naomi Campbell’s YouTube series published Tuesday. “I saw this happening.”

“I’m not going to say who did it, but it was celebrities, writing all this crazy s–t and putting them all over there. I saw them doing it, so when I saw it on the news, I laughed real hard,” he added.

Chappelle did not say what the notes said or whether he approved of the act.

How we got here: When former President Donald Trump moved into the White House in 2017, his staffers said they found nasty messages left in the cabinets and drawers. The notes made headlines in 2019 when then-White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham publicly spoke about how the Trump team described what they found at the White House when they arrived.

“We came into the White House. I’ll tell you something, every office was filled with Obama books and we had notes left behind that said ‘you will fail,’ ‘you aren’t going to make it,’” Grisham said. “At the time, we saw it as kind of a prank and something that always happened. We were so busy trying to learn where the bathrooms were and how to turn on the lights, it wasn’t that big of a deal.”

Former Obama staffers adamantly denied the claims.

Former President Barack Obama’s national security adviser Susan Rice said the claim was a “bald faced lie,” and former senior director of the National Security Council Jon Wolfsthal called it an “outrageous lie.”

“[N]obody left unimaginative notes written at a sixth-grade level,” said Cody Keenan, who served as a speechwriter for Obama.
