MSNBC host Joy Reid suggested that the criminal trials against former President Donald Trump represented a form of racial reckoning, indicating that the “DEIs” were “bringing it home.”
X users swiftly pushed back on Reid’s comments, dubbing her a “race baiter.”
Reid made these comments on Monday, coinciding with the commencement of the New York hush-money trial.
She expressed admiration for the symbolism of seeing black public officials such as Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis taking the lead in prosecuting Trump.
“But for me, there is something wonderfully poetic about the fact … the first person to actually criminally prosecute Donald Trump is a black Harvard grad,” Reid said.
“The very kind of person that his former staff, the people who worked for him, Steven Miller, etc., want to never be at Harvard Law School. But he was,” she continued. “And he came out and graduated, and he’s prosecuting you, Donald.”
“And a black woman is doing that same exact thing in Georgia and a black woman forced you to pay a $175 million fine,” Reid said, referring to Fani Willis, and calling into questioning the status of the bond that was posted on Trump’s behalf. “The people who put it up, that might not be legit.”
“Donald Trump is being held to account by the very multicultural, multiracial democracy that he’s trying to dismantle. … It says something good about our country that we’re still capable of having that happen. Go DEI. My DEIs are bringing it home,” she added.
Brandon Tatum weighed in on Reid’s “racist” rant, writing, “Joy Reid is NUTTY. She is excited because it is ‘black people’ that are prosecuting a ‘white man’ in Donald Trump.”
“Imagine if a white person said that “I am glad a jury of white people is locking up negroes. Joy Reid is the most racist person on TV…PERIOD!” he continued.
Dave Rubin posted a doctored clip of Reid’s rant where the word “black” was replaced with “white” to highlight how “how ridiculous” the host’s “anti-Trump meltdown” sounds when the races are swapped.
Some users on X pointed out the stark contrast in Reid’s current views on DEI hires compared to last month when she interviewed Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott amidst the aftermath of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.
Resist The Mainstream reported that Scott brushed off the moniker “DEI Mayor,” bestowed upon him by critics, condemning the term and those who hide behind the coded language rather than openly expressing racism.
“We know what they want to say,” Scott said, “but they don’t have the courage to say the N-word, and the fact that I don’t believe in their untruthful and wrong ideology.”
“I am very proud of my heritage and who I am and where I come from, scares them,” the mayor added, “because me being at my position means that their way of thinking, their way of life of being comfortable while everyone else suffers is going to be at risk, and they should be afraid because that’s my purpose in life.”
Reid quipped at one point in the interview: “So by right-wing logic, a ‘diversity hire’ would have been a white man.”
She also highlighted Scott’s overwhelming election in a predominantly Black city.
