Video footage captured by the New York Post depicted numerous adult males tearing down razor wire installed by the state and charging past Texas National Guardsmen. Their advance was halted at a section of the border wall, preventing further entry.
According to a Texas law enforcement source, the group comprised over 300 illegal immigrants, with approximately 100 adult males engaging in a confrontation with soldiers.
One individual has been arrested so far for assaulting a soldier, and more arrests are anticipated for property destruction and assault. Soldiers could be heard yelling at the immigrants to retreat in the video.
Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, stated that all migrants involved have been apprehended, and authorities are reviewing footage to identify those responsible for assaulting soldiers.
These individuals will be processed for deportation, although they retain the option to seek asylum. Texas also has the authority to press charges against migrants involved in assaults.
Customs and Border Protection emphasized in a statement that illegal border crossings carry consequences, including removal from the United States and potential prosecution for re-entry without authorization.
The incident marks the latest escalation in a prolonged border crisis, characterized by a surge in migrant arrivals, with 2.4 million recorded in FY 23 alone.
While numbers have decreased since the peak of 302,000 in December, concerns persist that arrivals may rise again in the approaching summer months.
The ongoing chaos at the border adds fuel to the debate in Washington, D.C., over how best to address the crisis, with Republicans advocating for reinstating Trump-era policies.
