The head of the country’s second-largest teachers’ union took some heat on social media for flying to in-person meetings as many students are still homebound and learning remotely.
Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) – the country’s second-largest teachers’ union, tweeted Monday that she was on her way “from Portland to Bend, OR to see our newest health care unit…the St Charles Techs with @OFNHP,” and a picture of herself and the plane she would be traveling in.
After she shared the post, critics called her out for making a private, non-essential flight and holding in-person meetings.
“Teacher’s Union President taking a private jet for what would be a four hour drive. You truly can’t make this stuff up,” tweeted Andrew Wagner with the Minnesota House GOP.
Wagner and other critics also highlighted Weingarten’s hypocrisy in raising climate change awareness while flying in “private” jets, though some argued it was a public flight from a regional airline.
“These are literally the same people who lecture about carbon footprints, because of course,” Wagner wrote.
“Nice carbon footprint teacher lady,” another user responded.
Amid the backlash, Weingarten responded to Wagner to “do your homework,” arguing the flight was not private.
“Really @andrewwagner – do your homework…it’s a public flight on #boutiqueair.. and the only way I could do 6 meetings today – 3 meetings in Salem/ Portland and 3 meetings in Bend to say thank you to the amazing essential workers we represent in Oregon,” she wrote.
One user posted a screenshot of the Twitter description of the airline Weingarten used which said: “Fly private for the cost of commercial to 31+ US destinations.”
“Students must be at home on zoom because my union won’t open schools. But I must fly inside a tiny private jet for multiple in-person meetings. Yeah that hangs together, right?” one critic wrote.
Another responded: “This Randi Weingarten ‘thank you tour’ really has me fired up. She’s been preaching about how dangerous the world is for teachers, but here she is, ignoring CDC guidance against non-essential travel, flying to 4 states. So, why can’t Oregon kids be in school full time?

Man, I should start a union and skim off the top from hard working teachers so I can fly private
