255 Transgender California Prison Inmates Have Requested Transfer To Women’s Prisons

A total of 255 inmates in California state prisons have asked to be transferred to women’s correctional facilities due to identifying as women since January 2020, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).

The inmates have requested in accordance with a bill California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed in January that requires the CDCR “to, during initial intake and classification, and in a private setting, ask each individual entering into the custody of the department to specify the individual’s gender identity whether the individual identifies as transgender, nonbinary, or intersex, and their gender pronoun and honorific.”

“The bill would prohibit the department from disciplining a person for refusing to answer or not disclosing complete information in response to these questions. The bill would prohibit staff, contractors, and volunteers of the department from failing to consistently use the gender pronoun and honorific an individual has specified in verbal and written communications with or regarding that individual that involve the use of a pronoun or honorific,” the bill states.

The CDCR said Tuesday overall 261 inmates have asked for “gender based housing,” nearly all of which requested to be transferred to female prisons.

“255 are from transgender women and non-binary incarcerated people who are requesting to be housed in a female institution and six are from transgender men and non-binary incarcerated people who are requesting to be housed in a male institution,” Deputy Press Secretary Terry Thornton told the Daily Caller.

The CDCR has so far approved 21 requests, and Thornton said they plan to accept all asks for a gender-based transfer.

Four of the 21 approved requests have already been relocated to the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla.

“Two of the 21 have changed their minds,” Thornton said.

He said there are currently 1,129 inmates in state correctional facilities who identify as transgender.

Female inmates who spoke to the Los Angeles Times are apparently getting fearful of possible sexual violence and warned that “men are coming.”

“That if we think it’s bad now, be prepared for the worst. That it’s going to be off the hook, it’s going to be jumping,” 41-year-old Tomiekia Johnson told the publication that she heard inmates say. “They say we’re going to need a facility that’s going to be like a maternity ward. They say we’re going to have an inmate program where inmates become nannies.”
