To whom it may concern…
My mom used to write this on my absent note for elementary school. “To whom it may concern, my daughter was sick yesterday.” That’s it. That was the excuse note. She didn’t ask for work of the day that I missed, no need to discuss my ailments. She did not care about what the school thought. Whether I was sick or we were just playing hooky for a day, she simply was the mother and her excuse was final.. Savage.. I still laugh about it.
Fast forward to raising my kids. I knew times had changed. I have three kids in very different age groups. I have a daughter in college, a daughter in high school, and a son in elementary school. Teachers now want a doctor’s note and would give me a packet of work that they missed. I had already thought the teachers administration was moving away from guidance and teaching our children to move more towards government nonsense.
I have always loved public schooling for me and for my children. My older kids have teachers that they are still in touch with. I liked the structure, the learning, the great teachers, social aspect, aides, admin. Where have these incredible people gone? Have they sold out? Have they sold out your child’s education and well being for money? So they can stay home and still get paid?
I have many friends and family members in this profession who are AMAZING. They love their students and are unhappy to not be with them everyday in class. This is pure political theater. Many teachers know this and they understand the bad rap they will endure.
This story is not about my kids. It’s about all of the kids in America who will be devastated by this COVID lock down. This effects all children, urban and rural. The youth of our generation will become afraid, uneducated, anti social, and depressed. All because teachers who have clawed their way through college, now want to sit at home like children because of their unions. Was it not about the kids? Where was their cause? Out the door.
The teachers Union is laughable. Most unions are. They are not in the interest of the people. Or your kids. The representatives are interested and invested in their own pocketbooks.
In retrospect, during the closing down of schools of this amazing nation I have come to one conclusion, homeschool your kids if you can. I know not every parent can do that. I understand, but we can also work harder to get our kids into schools of our choice. We can vote on this issue. Take your kids to schools where the teachers actually want to to teach.
This COVID government overreach will be a detriment to kids of all ages. Academically and socially. Our kids will be set back a year, maybe two years. When they go back to school will they all be on the same page? The answer is no.
While I think education is very important, we have to raise our kids accordingly. We must, as parents, teach them to overcome changes. We can show them how to navigate life through trying times. Their mental health is our number one priority. Grades are a distant second.
In this time of this pandemic the people who have failed us most are the school unions and some teachers. For folks who don’t have young kids in school they will never understand. Do not mistake my irritation for “It takes a village to raise a child.” I am fine raising my kids without the help of the village, government, or teachers. I am sad that the teachers of this country could not get it together and stand up for the kids.
Sincerely, the mom who wrote this note to her graduating daughter…
You’re off to great places! So here is your day! Your mountain is waiting so…get on your way!
