President Joe Biden, not unlike many other disingenuous politicians, has a tendency to make remarks that are contradictory to his prior statements. Nowhere is that more apparent than in his commentary regarding the coronavirus pandemic and when life can be expected to return to “normal” for most Americans.
On Tuesday, Biden heralded the news that there would be enough vaccines available for every American who wanted one by May, only to then say that he didn’t expect life to return to normal until March of next year.
Enough vaccines available
Biden delivered a speech at the White House on Tuesday to provide a progress report on the government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, particularly in terms of production and distribution of the vaccine, Fox News reported.
He noted that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine had received emergency use approval and that production of the newly approved single-shot vaccine had been ramped up substantially.
“Here’s what all this means: We’re now on track to have enough vaccine supply for every adult in America by the end of May,” Biden said.
He continued, “About three weeks ago, we were able to say that we’ll have enough vaccine supply for adults by the end of July.”
“And I’m pleased to announce today, as a consequence of the stepped-up process that I’ve ordered and just outlined, this country will have enough vaccine supply — I’ll say it again — for every adult in America by the end of May. By the end of May. That’s progress — important progress,” the president said.
Return to normalcy
That is indeed “important progress” and great news. However, in that same speech Biden downplayed the great news by harping on the need to remain cautious and continue abiding by various mitigation measures and restrictions.
In light of the news that there would be ample vaccines available for all American adults within a few months, a reporter asked for a prediction on when life could “return to normal” for most Americans, Breitbart reported.
“When do I think things will get back to normal?” Biden replied. “I’ve been cautioned not to give an answer to that because we don’t know for sure.”
“But my hope is, by this time next year, we’re going to be back to normal, and before that — my hope,” he said.
“But again, it depends upon if people continue — continue to be smart and understand that we still can have significant losses. There’s a lot we have to do yet,” Biden said.
