Fact: The United States drives most of the world’s demand for human trafficking.
One of America’s biggest dirty little secrets is the fact that it is one of the biggest consumers of illicit sex in the world, according to Geoff Rogers, co-founder of the United States Institute Against Human Trafficking.
Although sex trafficking is the unmentioned elephant in the room for most Americans, federal and local law enforcement across the country are working together to combat this pressing problem.
Particularly, the past 12 months been pivotal for the war on sex and human trafficking as U.S. Marshals, FBI, local law enforcement, and various federal agencies have conducted an ever-growing number of busts, resulting in hundreds of arrests.
The latest human trafficking bust carried out by the multi-agency unit known as the West Alabama Human Trafficking Task Force resulted in 20 arrests in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, WSFA 12 reports.
Suspects were detained during the undercover operation conducted on Friday and Saturday nights.
Fifteen men were arrested for Soliciting Prostitution, while five others were charged with Traveling to Meet a Minor for an Unlawful Sex Act and Electronic Solicitation of a Child.
WSFA 12 reports some of the men also face additional charges for Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Carrying a Pistol Without a License.
Lt. Darren Beams, commander of the West Alabama Human Trafficking Task Force said, “The officers working this detail did an outstanding job on these cases.”
Beams added, “Operations like these are crucial in the fight to prevent human trafficking from happening in our area.”
The successful task force is made up of officers from local law enforcement agencies including the Tuscaloosa Police Department, Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, Northport Police Department, University of Alabama Police Department, as well as survivor services provider Trafficking Hope.
This undercover crackdown on human trafficking is one of many in recent months as law enforcement continues to tackle the massive problem facing young Americans in every zip code.
