The Biden administration announced Monday they will allow families separated at the southern border during the Trump administration to reunite and remain in the U.S.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said during a press event “we are hoping to reunite the families, either here or in their country of origin. We hope to be in a position to give them the election. And if, in fact they seek to reunite here in the United States, we will explore lawful pathways for them to remain in the United States, and to address the family needs.”
“We are acting as restoratively as possible,” he added.
Per the Hill “under former President Trump’s family separation policy, some 2,800 families were separated in 2018. While some were reunited, another 550 children were not reconnected with their parents under the prior administration.”
The Biden administration has recently been under fire after being accused of re-opening a migrant detention center for children.
Speaking to Univision Friday, Biden reacted to questions about his detention center for migrant children in Texas by saying what he’s doing is “much different” than what the Trump admin did.
“Right now, there’s thousands of immigrants, thousands of unaccompanied children coming across the border,” Biden said. “We’ve been able to place a significant number of them in licensed facilities throughout the country — shelters throughout the country. But what happened is, in Texas, they opened up one, one that was a former one used in the administration — the last administration.”
