Acting Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman testified before the House Appropriations subcommittee on Thursday claiming that right-wing extremists plan to blow up the U.S. Capitol and kill as many government members as possible.
The American law enforcement officer told subcommittee members during the session that heavy security is needed at the upcoming State of the Union.
“We know that members of the militia groups that were present on Jan. 6 have stated their desire that they want to blow up the Capitol and kill as many members as possible, with a direct nexus to the State of the Union,” Pitman said.
“Based on that,” she explained. “[It’s] prudent that Capitol Police maintain its enhanced security posture until we address those issues going forward.”
“[Insurrectionists] “weren’t only interested in attacking members and officers. They wanted to send a symbolic message to the nation as to who was in charge of that legislative process.”
Security flaws at the 6 January Capitol siege have been attributed to the lack of response to actionable intel by agencies such as the FBI and Department of Homeland Security.
It has also been reported that Iran has made threats against the Capitol.
