Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) plans to run in November for the District 4 seat being vacated by Ken Buck, but said no to the special election to replace him in June because she wants to serve out her current term as the representative of District 3.
Boebert is sensitive to the House’s paper-thin margin and doesn’t want to “further imperil the already very slim House Republican majority,” she said as a reason for not running.
She is against the idea of a special election even though Republicans need every vote they can get at this point.
“Put in your Ukraine-first candidate,” she said. “I don’t really care. It’s going to be a placeholder for six months, but at least there will be someone to help us keep our majority.”
The seat is a safe Republican one, which District 3 is not, so she will do best staying put and allowing a “placeholder” Republican to fill it while she campaigns.
Buck announced Tuesday that he would step down next week without really giving a reason and only gave Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) 30 minutes notice of his plans. He is a strong critic of former President Donald Trump, and it’s possible he wanted to hurt his own party out of disgust that Trump just clinched the nomination.
