An Associated Press reporter confronted Biden State Department spokesman Ned Price during a press conference, suggesting the administration is taking credit for some of former President Trump’s accomplishments.
The story: Associated Press reporter Matt Lee called out Price at Monday’s press conference over remarks he made about the Russia-Germany gas pipeline Nord Stream 2. The project has drawn scrutiny over the power it would give Russia in Europe with some critics noting that the country has cut natural gas supplies to Ukraine over some disputes in the past.
This week, political leaders in some European countries called on President Biden to take steps to prevent the pipeline’s completion.
What they said: Lee confronted Price after the spokesman said that 18 entities have backed out of the project in “good faith efforts.” Price credited “our strategy, including the legislative strategy, the strategy that, of course, Congress has been behind.”
“So we’ll continue to work closely with Germany, we’ll continue to work closely with our other allies and partners in Europe to uphold Europe’s own stated energy and security goals,” he added.
Lee then pointed out that the work had begun under the Trump administration.
“Don’t you think it’s bit disingenuous to claim credit for the 18 companies winding down?” Lee asked Price.” All of this work was done in the previous administration, and you guys have only been … in office for a month. Right? Are you telling me that in the last four weeks, these 18 companies all of a sudden decide to say, ‘Oh my god! We better not doing anything with Nord Stream 2.”
“All of that, you guys are taking credit for stuff that the previous administration did! No?”
Price suggested, in response, that the State Department has remained largely unchanged.
“Matt, I am speaking for the Department of State. The people who have been working this, the people who are working this now, we’re the same people a month ago, were the same people three months ago, three months ago,” he said.
