New York Lawmakers ‘Inching’ Towards Bipartisan Impeachment Investigation of Gov. Cuomo

Andrew Cuomo

On Friday, Democratic New York Assemblyman Robert Kim, who accused New York Governor Andrew Cuomo of threatening his career over his criticism of Cuomo’s decision to send potentially COVID-19 positive patients into nursing homes, said Friday that New York lawmakers are “inching” towards a bipartisan impeachment investigation against the governor.

“It will take a little time to build that consensus, but every day we are inching toward the impeachment process,” Kim said in an interview with a Yahoo News podcast. He told Yahoo News that “along with ‘virtually all’ Republicans, between 25 and 30 Democratic legislators currently support an impeachment inquiry into Cuomo — a number he suggested is growing steadily.”

Kim alleges that Cuomo threatened to “ruin [his] career” if Kim did not help “cover-up” the scandal that the Cuomo administration “purposely hid life and death information from the Department of Justice in fear that the information could be weaponized against them.

“He laid out how he was going to come out to the public and tell everyone how bad of a human being I am. And they would ruin my career. I mean, the way that he presented himself… It left my wife in tears for 2 hours,” Kim told Fox News on Saturday.

Kim later added, “I believe his top aide had accidentally told the truth of the cover-up that they purposely hid life and death information from the Department of Justice in fear that the information could be weaponized against them.”

The Albany-Times Union, a local New York newspaper, reported last week that Governor Cuomo was under federal investigation after Cuomo’s top aide admitted in a leaked Zoom call that the Cuomo administration had suppressed the release of COVID-19 related nursing home deaths because Cuomo worried it could be “used against us” by the Department of Justice.

“The probe by the U.S. attorney’s office in the Eastern District of New York is apparently in its early stages and is focusing on the work of some of the senior members of the governor’s task force, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter who is not authorized to comment publicly,” the Times-Union reported.
