The media is lumping together Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) vacation to Cancun and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s handling of nursing home deaths.
In detail: The most obvious example of placing both stories in the same basket came from the New York Times. The publication wrote that both the Texas Senator and the New York Governor “face scandals” while making the case that former President Trump’s absence has allowed the media to focus on such stories.
NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” mocked both Cruz and Cuomo last week, where they were played by Aidy Bryant and Pete Davidson respectively. ABC News correspondent Jonathan Karl similarly made it appear as Cruz traveling to Mexico is on par with Cuomo’s widely-criticized nursing home policy and the botched reporting of the death toll.
Karl also suggested that the controversy surrounding Cuomo only emerged last week around the same time that Cruz prompted outrage.
“This week, we also had our first post-Trump political scandals; Ted Cruz’s misguided trip to Cancun and the allegations of cover-up and deadly mismanagement facing Andrew Cuomo,” he said.

How we got here: The mainstream media initially ignored the questions regarding Cuomo’s handling of nursing home deaths, after spending serious time praising the governor for most of last year. When they started covering the developments in the story, primetime shows dedicated only a couple of minutes, often collectively, to the news about Cuomo.
When Cruz was caught going to Mexico while Texas was fighting a cold-weather crisis that left millions without power, most of the attention in the media turned on the Senator. Last week, the Cuomo scandal received less than three minutes on the six most-watched shows on MSNBC and CNN, compared to the 46 minutes they spent talking about Cruz’s trip.
ABC News gave Cruz four times more coverage than the New York governor.
