Jim Carrey announces he will quit painting ‘political protest cartoons’

Former President Donald Trump was clearly unpopular within many circles — notably that of leftist Hollywood entertainers.

One particularly harsh critic was actor Jim Carrey, who became famous for sharing often disturbing paintings of Trump and many of the 45th president’s top allies. Carrey recently revealed, however, that he will no longer be creating the controversial artwork.

“It was not my intention”

According to the Daily Wire, the award-winning funnyman cited his desire to “reclaim a little neurological bandwidth” in spurring the decision to retire from what he called a “political protest.”

Though he has seemed to have a neverending stream of critical words for those involved in the Trump administration, Carrey announced in a tweet to his 19 million Twitter followers that he would be ending his anti-Trump side-gig.

“If it seemed like I was ignoring my many Twitter followers here and outside the US and Canada in my quest to rid our democracy of ‘Orange Julius Caesar’ and his Empire of Lies, it was not my intention,” he wrote.

The comedian added that he “just assumed that a radicalized America is a threat to us all” and that “when a madman grabs the wheel of the bus loaded with innocent passengers and threatens to drive it off a cliff, it tends to steal everyone’s focus.”

Many Carrey critics denounced his paintings as unnecessarily grotesque or incendiary, but he expressed gratitude for the support of those who offered kinder reactions.

“I can’t just watch this nightmare unfold”

In a 2018 USA Today report, Carrey explained that he felt a perceived duty to display his dissent through artistic means.

“It’s not a choice to be doing the cartoons,” he said at the time. “I’m doing [them] because I can’t just watch this nightmare unfold.”

Various paintings revolved around current events and headlines related to Trump’s allies. One such caricature referenced incessant claims from Democrats that the then-president was too close to Russia.

While Carrey claims he is putting away his paintbrushes, Trump is poised to remain an influential political presence for years to come. It might not be surprising, therefore, for the Dumb and Dumber star to revive his self-imposed duty to share the disturbing artwork at some point in the future.
