Rep. Matt Gaetz says another Trump run is the ‘future of the GOP’

To the dismay of some D.C. Republicans, the future of the Republican Party is former President Donald Trump, says one GOP congressman.

According to Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Trump should run for president again in 2024, the Washington Examiner reported

“The future of the GOP”

Gaetz made the remarks Sunday during an appearance on Fox News’ The Next Revolution With Steve Hilton.

“I believe that the future of the GOP is another candidacy for [former] President Trump in 2024,” Gaetz said.

As of yet, Trump has been unwilling to say whether or not he plans to run again in 2024. But Gaetz said he spoke with the former president on Saturday and, according to the Florida congressman, Trump was “talking absolutely like a candidate.”

If Trump does choose to run in four years, he will likely be a formidable candidate as he remains popular with Republican voters, according to recent polling.

A poll conducted by Suffolk University and USA Today found that 46% of those surveyed would be willing to leave the Republican Party and join a new party created by Trump. Reports indicate that although Trump has considered forming his own party, he has moved away from the idea after being persuaded by some of his allies that it is not the way forward.

The GOP civil war

Gaetz also spoke about the current divide within the Republican Party.

“I don’t see a Republican Party that is entirely united,” Gaetz said. “There is the ‘America First,’ pro-Trump wing of the party, and there is the establishment wing of the party and the establishment wants their power back.”

As an example of the GOP establishment, Gaetz pointed to Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) arguing that she supports never-ending endless wars, unfettered immigration and unfair trade deals. Cheney also recently sided with Democrats in voting to impeach Trump.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), too, has completely distanced himself from the former president. McConnell has stated that he never wants to speak to Trump again, according to the Washington Examiner, citing sources “close” to the senator.

There is certainly a divide in the Republican Party and the dividing line is Trump. Politicians are either with him or against him, and the problem for establishment-type Republicans is that the voters appear to be with him.
