There was a time when if someone had suggested that Republican voters would eventually turn on Fox News, that person would have been laughed out of the room.
That’s not so much the case anymore, however. According to Newsweek, Fox News seems to be collapsing into free fall as their viewers flock to emerging conservative networks that tend to cater more toward supporters of former President Donald Trump.
A recent USA Today/Suffolk Poll survey confirmed that the cable news giant finds itself in a precarious situation.
“Most trusted source of news”
Prior to the 2020 election, which is the tipping point that many have said was the beginning of Fox News’ downfall, the cable news behemoth enjoyed decades of consistently high ratings, besting their competitors in virtually every time slot on the schedule.
But the new poll, which was released over the weekend, provided evidence that the network is now in trouble, as only 34% of respondents said that Fox News was their “most trusted source of news,” according to Newsweek. The number doesn’t sound super low on the surface, but compare that to the same poll taken in October 2016, in which 58% of Trump voters said Fox News was their most trusted source.
That translates into a staggering 24% drop inside of Trump’s first and only term in the White House.
The new numbers come on the heels of the right-leaning network taking a huge hit following the 2020 election. TheBlaze reported at the time that Fox News sunk 32% in the ratings in a two-week period following the 2020 election, even losing out for the first time to CNN in prime time slots.
Daytime lineups also took a hit, while CNN and MSNBC both made gains in the same period of time.
Where’s everyone going?
Thanks to a few controversies stemming from Fox News’ election coverage, specifically on Election Day when they made an extremely early call for then-candidate Joe Biden in the state of Arizona, it didn’t take long for viewers to band together and search for new lands.
Newsmax TV and One America News Network — both of which were repeatedly promoted by Trump — saw an immediate influx in viewers, with many of them likely former Fox News viewers who became fed-up with not only the network’s election coverage, but also with commentary from some of the network’s not-so-Trump-friendly personalities.
According to Yahoo News, Newsmax TV hit the headlines in early December after they pulled off the impossible by actually beating Fox News for the first time in the coveted 25–54 demographic in an early primetime slot.
At the time, CNN’s Brian Stelter broke down why he believed Newsmax was able to land such a brutal punch against the otherwise unbeatable cable news network. “Viewers who were frustrated when Fox admitted the truth of Trump’s loss sought other options,” he declared. And other options are exactly what they found.
