An Arkansas Republican just made a decision that could jeopardize his political future.
Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) has publicly stated that he would not support former President Donald Trump if he were to run again for the U.S. presidency in 2024, Breitbart reported.
Hutchinson made the comments Sunday during an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union when he was asked by host Dana Bash whether he would support a Trump run in 2024.
Won’t support Trump run
“No, I wouldn’t,” Hutchinson replied. “It’s time, and he’s got a good family. I worked with Ivanka and others, and they love America. But I would not support him for reelection in 2024.”
Hutchinson went on to argue that, although Trump ought to have a voice in the Republican Party, he shouldn’t be the sole voice that defines its future.
“We’ve got to define it for ourselves, and that has to be based upon the principles that gave us the strength in America,” Hutchinson said.
The governor, however, insisted that it will be important for Republicans going forward “to respond and identify with the issues that gave [Trump] the first election and gave him support throughout his presidency.”
“There is one that we have to reach out to, but it’s based upon conservative principles and reaching out to the blue-collar voters that are important and identify with him because he’s fighting for them, and we’ve got to take that message, but we just got to handle it in a different way with different personalities,” Hutchinson concluded.
Hutchinson’s statements seemed to be an attempt to align himself with other Republicans who are trying to distance themselves from Trump, although not Trump’s policies, following the Capitol riot on Jan. 6.
According to Arkansas state Sen. Jim Hendren, Hutchinson’s nephew who left the Republican Party following the events at the Capitol, said what happened that day was the “last straw” in terms of his support for Trump.
“I asked myself, what in the world would I tell my grandchildren when they asked one day what happened, and what did I do about it?” Hendren said in a video statement.
He continued, “There’s a real danger that the Republican Party is going to be one that you can’t win a primary without being a Trump supporter, and you can’t win a general by being a Trump supporter.”
