Disney’s streaming service had added a warning to “The Muppet Show,” telling users that it includes offensive stereotypes.
The story: Disney+ only recently released the full run of “The Muppet Show.” On Friday, the streaming service made available all five seasons of the show, with Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and the Swedish Chef.
The show, however, can only be seen on an adult account. Additionally, Disney+ slapped a disclaimer, warning users before watching it that they might find some parts of it offensive.
The disclaimer not only highlights “negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people of cultures” but also condemns them. The message notes that Disney+ opted for the warning rather than censorship.
“This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together. Disney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.”

Why? It is unclear what exactly triggered the warning but it might be because the Muppet characters depict Native Americans, Arabs, and East Asians. One episode also shows Johnny Cash playing on a stage adorned with the Confederate flag.
Not a first: The same disclaimer is also shown on “Dumbo,” “Peter Pan,” “Swiss Family Robinson,” and “The Aristocats.” Disney+ does not allow accounts for children under the age of seven to watch these movies because of the negative depictions of certain cultures that promote stereotypes.
Disney is separately facing another controversy over the firing of actress Gina Carano. The company fired the “The Mandalorian” star for posts she shared on social media and later tried to get Carano to issue a scripted apology.
