Poll Shows Republicans Want Party To Be More Like Trump, Less Like Establishment

Top Republicans, who have decided that they want to be against former President Donald Trump, are in a tough position.

A new poll from Rasmussen found that 73 percent of voters surveyed want the Republican Party to be more like former President Trump and less like the establishment Republicans.

“Which of these statements is closer to your belief: ‘Donald Trump is still the kind of leader the Republican Party needs,’ or ‘Republicans need to get away from the legacy of Donald Trump?’” Rasmussen asked.

“Republican Likely Voters: 73% Leader more like Trump 24% Less like Trump 3% Not Sure,” it said.

“Forty-one percent (41%) of Republicans say the impeachment didn’t make much difference in their opinion of the former president,” it said.

Ever since the most recent impeachment of former President Trump did not work his approval rating has soared.

The former president’s approval rating has gone to 59 percent after the acquittal which is an improvement from the 41 percent it was in January in a Morning Consult poll.

This is going to be a major issue for Republicans like Senate Minority Leader and Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell who excoriated the former president after he was acquitted.

The Kentucky senator said that his vote to acquit was based on the fact that he did not believe the Senate had the Constitutional authority to convict him.

But, after shredding the former president in a speech in front of the Senate and the world, he did hint at saying Trump should be criminally prosecuted.

“A mob was assaulting the Capitol in his name…He was the only one [who could end it.]…The president did not act swiftly, he did not do his job…he watched television happily, happily as the chaos unfolded,” McConnell said.

“They did this because they’d been fed wild falsehoods by the most powerful man on Earth because he was angry he lost an election,” he said. “President Trump is practically and morally responsible.”

“It was obvious that only President Trump could end this … The president did not act swiftly. He did not do his job. He didn’t take steps so federal law could be faithfully executed and order restored,” McConnell said in his takedown of the former president.

“With police officers bleeding and broken glass covering Capitol floors, he kept repeating election lies and praising the criminals,” he said.

“Trump is still liable for everything he did while he’s in office. He didn’t get away with anything yet,” he said as he said that the former president could be criminally prosecuted.

In a statement, Former President Trump said, “The Republican Party can never again be respected or strong with political “leaders” like Sen. Mitch McConnell at its helm.”

“Mitch is a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack, and if Republican Senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again. He will never do what needs to be done, or what is right for our Country,” Trump added.

The former president also vowing to support primary challengers in upcoming elections.

“Where necessary and appropriate, I will back primary rivals who espouse Making America Great Again and our policy of America First. We want brilliant, strong, thoughtful, and compassionate leadership,” Trump said.
