The following article, Bernie Bros Get Checked by Right Wing Populist Journalist, was first published on Big League Politics.
Bernie Bros have selective amnesia when it comes to Bernie Sander’s political beliefs.
On February 16, 2021, the People for Bernie Twitter attempted to dunk on Senators Mitt Romney and Tom Cotton for proposing a minimum wage increase.
Romney announced on Twitter that “Millions of Americans are struggling to make ends meet. I’m introducing a bill with @SenTomCotton that would increase the minimum wage while ensuring businesses cannot hire illegal immigrants. We must protect American workers.”

The People for Bernie quickly responded “Undocumented immigrants have done more for America than Mitt Romney and Tom Cotton.”

The People for Bernie account thought it was slick until populist journalist Ryan Girdusky swooped in and pointed out that Sanders held different views on immigration in 2015. Girdusky tweeted, “Wait until they hear what Bernie Sanders said about mass immigration in 2015.”

Girdusky was referring to Sanders’pro-immigration restriction comments in 2015. During an interview with Vox, Sanders said open borders is a “Koch brothers proposal.” When pressed by Ezra Klein on the issue, Sanders declared that open borders is “a right-wing proposal, which says essentially there is no United States” and that “It would make everybody in America poorer —you’re doing away with the concept of a nation state, and I don’t think there’s any country in the world that believes in that.”
Sanders actually had sensible views on immigration pre-Trump. For example, he poured cold water on George W. Bush’s immigration plan when he went on Lou Dobbs’ show in 2007. The Vermont Senator opposed Bush’s plan due to how it would hurt American workers through the depression of wages and expanded labor force willing to work for lower wages and worse conditions. At the point in his career, Sanders actually believed in the integrity of the nation-state and played an integral role in killing Bush’s amnesty plan.
But once the Orange Man was elected, people lost their minds. Whatever sensible views Sanders held on immigration, completely went out the window in the Trump era. His supporters are even worse with regards to this and are completely oblivious about their idol’s previously hawkish views on immigration.
Hence the futility of left-wing populism at the present and the future.
