McConnell Has No Plans Of Speaking To Trump Ever Again: Report

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has drawn the scorn of supporters of former President Donald Trump, and his most recent decision is not going to score him any points with them.

Sources that are close to Sen. McConnell said that he has no plans to speak to the former president ever again, The Washington Post reported.

“McConnell has not spoken with Trump since Dec. 14 — the day McConnell acknowledged President Biden won the November election — and he does not plan to ever speak with him again, people close to him say,” the Post reported.

“Like others, they spoke on the condition of anonymity to disclose internal details. Even the backchannel the two men once had — between McConnell’s former top aide Josh Holmes and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner — is now cold,” the Post added.

The news comes after Sen. McConnell excoriated the former president after he voted to acquit him during his impeachment trial last week.

“A mob was assaulting the Capitol in his name…He was the only one [who could end it.]…The president did not act swiftly, he did not do his job…he watched television happily, happily as the chaos unfolded,” McConnell said.

“They did this because they’d been fed wild falsehoods by the most powerful man on Earth because he was angry he lost an election,” he said. “President Trump is practically and morally responsible.”

“It was obvious that only President Trump could end this … The president did not act swiftly. He did not do his job. He didn’t take steps so federal law could be faithfully executed and order restored,” McConnell said in his takedown of the former president.

“With police officers bleeding and broken glass covering Capitol floors, he kept repeating election lies and praising the criminals,” he said.

“Trump is still liable for everything he did while he’s in office. He didn’t get away with anything yet,” he said as he said that the former president could be criminally prosecuted.

The former president immediately hit back at Sen. McConnell, calling him “dour” and “sullen.”

“The Republican Party can never again be respected or strong with political ‘leaders’ like Sen. Mitch McConnell at its helm,” he said.

“Mitch is a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack, and if Republican Senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again. He will never do what needs to be done, or what is right for our Country,” Trump said.

“Where necessary and appropriate, I will back primary rivals who espouse Making America Great Again and our policy of America First. We want brilliant, strong, thoughtful, and compassionate leadership,” he said.

But Sen. McConnell, who is popular in his state of Kentucky, is not popular in the rest of the nation, even among Republicans. And polls show that former President Trump is the most popular Republican, which means a fight with him is likely not wise.

“It doesn’t make too much sense having the least popular person in the party attacking the most popular person,” Jason Miller, a spokesman for former President Trump, said. “I’m not sure what Mitch thinks he is going to accomplish.”
