Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH), a prominent member of the GOP establishment, recently announced that he would not be seeking re-election in 2022, likely due to former President Donald Trump’s continued influence over the direction of the Republican Party.
Now, an ally of Trump, former Ohio GOP Chairwoman Jane Timken, has announced that she will be running to take over Portman’s Senate seat to help promote the former president’s “America First” agenda, Breitbart reports.
Fighting against the socialist left
In a Thursday video announcing her candidacy, Timken called out the anti-Trump GOP establishment — particularly former Ohio Gov. John Kasich — and took aim squarely at the “socialist left” and proponents of its agenda in the Democratic Party and President Joe Biden’s administration.
That agenda includes “amnesty” for millions of illegal immigrants, massive tax increases, and concerted attacks against the domestic energy production industry, all points that Timken described as dangerous for the future of the country.
“We can’t let America become a socialist country,” she said. “I’m running for the United States Senate to stand up for you, just like when I stood next to President Trump and supported his America First agenda that created jobs and brought manufacturing back to our shores.”
Timken went on: “As Ohio Republican Party chairman, I cleaned house of the Kasich establishment, who tried to elect Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden. I unified the party and delivered a second, decisive Ohio win for President Trump.”
Taking on the establishment
The former GOP chair also vowed that, as a senator, she will “advance the Trump agenda without fear or hesitation,” with a special focus on creating American manufacturing jobs, “defending the unborn and our Second Amendment,” and standing up for law enforcement and strong border security. According to Breitbart, Timken also issued a separate statement about her inability to “sit on the sidelines and watch Biden and the Socialist Left do this to our country.”
“So I’m stepping forward to be a conservative disruptor once again, and running for the U.S. Senate to fight for the Trump agenda, stop socialism dead in its tracks and be a champion for all Ohioans,” she said.
A crowded field of candidates
The Hill reports that Timken was one of the first prominent Republicans to throw a hat in the ring in what is anticipated to be a rather crowded field of GOP contenders for Portman’s seat, to say nothing of a number of Democrats who may also make a run at the soon-to-be-vacant position in the upper chamber.
Only time will tell if Ohio voters, who strongly supported former President Trump in both 2016 and 2020, will choose a new Trump-aligned senator to replace Portman, stick with the old Republican establishment, or veer toward the left with a Democrat to take over that spot.
