Major League Baseball legend Steve Garvey has edged ahead of U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff in California’s U.S. Senate primary.
As of Wednesday morning, Garvey, a former 10-time MLB All-Star, led Schiff by an incredibly slim margin of just 4,801 votes with more than 5 million votes tallied – about 85% of expected returns.
“As California’s votes are counted, it’s clear that our message of unity, common sense, and compassion resonates across the state,” Garvey said. “I am deeply honored by the trust and support shown in these preliminary results.
The candidates are in a race to capture the Senate seat formerly held by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who passed away in September of last year.
Fox News explains that California puts all candidates, regardless of party, on the same primary ballot, and the two who get the most votes advance to the general election.
Schiff, who has served in the U.S. Congress since 2001. He and Garvey are the top two winners in the California primary, and will face off in the general election in November. Schiff was previously in the lead, but now Garvey has slipped ahead of him.
“We’re in first place and gaining momentum! I’m excited that my plan to improve Californians’ quality of life through real, compassionate solutions is resonating across our state,” Garvey cheered.

However, there were over 20 other candidates running for the seat, with two Democrats, Katie Porter and Barbara Lee, in 3rd and 4th places. Together, they raked in over 1.5 million votes.
Who ultimately wins the race in November may depend on whether Garvey can win over some of the Democrat voters who voted in the primary for the other candidates.
