Report: New York Republican to introduce impeachment resolution against Gov. Cuomo

An effort will reportedly soon be underway to impeach New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) for his role in underreporting the deaths of coronavirus patients in nursing homes in the state.

The Daily Caller reports that New York state Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor (R) has plans to introduce a formal impeachment resolution against Cuomo to the state assembly after amassing some 30,000 signatures on a petition to oust the governor.

“If ever there was a governor that deserves to be impeached, it’s the governor who made a decision that caused massive amounts of deaths and then covered it up for nine months,” Lalor said in an interview with the Daily Caller.

Growing scandal

Things first began to go south for Cuomo after a report was released by New York Attorney General Letitia James indicating that his administration had underreported the state’s coronavirus-related deaths in nursing homes by as much as 50%.

Cuomo did face some backlash following this revelation, but ultimately, he was not held accountable. The story died down — that is, until last week.

Last Thursday, the New York Post published a report that revealed Cuomo’s top aide, Melissa DeRosa, had said in a private conversation with state lawmakers that Cuomo’s administration actively covered up the real number of coronavirus-related deaths in the state’s assisted living facilities.

DeRosa seemed to suggest that the purpose of the cover-up was to escape investigation by former President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice (DOJ).

It’s an assertion that has landed Cuomo in some really hot water.

Bipartisan backlash

In fact, there are even a number of Democrats in New York who want to hold Cuomo accountable for the cover-up. One group, for example, wants to strip Cuomo of his emergency powers, the Daily Caller reports.

Many New York Republicans, including Lalor, do not think that is a sufficient penalty, however.

“If making a decision that leads to the death of thousands of New Yorkers and then covering it up and possibly obstructing justice is not an impeachable offense, there’s no such thing as an impeachable offense,” the assemblyman told the Daily Caller.

While Lalor’s resolution to remove the governor could come as soon as Thursday, it remains unclear whether there will actually be enough support in New York’s legislature to impeach the Democrat governor.
