Asked about a proposal for studying reparations for black Americans, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked “Does the President support the legislation? “He stopped short of saying that during the campaign. Would he sign that if it came to his desk?”
Psaki responded “Well, he’s supported a study of reparations, which is I believe is what’s being discussed, and studying the continuing impacts of slavery, which is being discussed in this hearing on H.R. 40, I believe it is.”
She added “and he continues to demonstrate his commitment to take comprehensive action to address the systemic racism that persists today. Obviously, that is… having that study is a part of that, but he has signed an executive order on his first day, which would begin to deliver on his commitment to having an across-government approach to addressing racial inequality and making sure equity is a part of his entire policy agenda.”
According to a recent report from The Hill “a House Judiciary subcommittee will host a hearing Wednesday to discuss the creation of a commission that would explore reparations for Black Americans, an idea long floated in Congress that has gained traction over the past year.”
The bill, if passed will establish a commission to “examine slavery and discrimination in the colonies and the United States from 1619 to the present and recommend appropriate remedies.”
The resolution, H.R. 40 was first introduced in the House in 1989 by late Michigan congressman John Conyers, a Democrat.
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) has reintroduced the bill to the House in January with 118 co-sponsors, and now has 162 as support among the left has grown.
Sen. Cory Booker has introduced the companion bill in the Senate and currently has 17 co-sponsors.
Appearing virtually on the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties, NFL legend Herschel Walker blasted Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee over her plan to establish a commission to explore reparations for Black Americans.
Walker said “We use black power to create white guilt. My approach is biblical. How can I ask my Heavenly Father to forgive me if I can’t forgive my brother?”
“I never want to put any one religion down; my religion teaches togetherness. Reparations teach separation,” he added.
