Regardless of what D.C. Republicans think of former President Donald Trump, he is still as popular as ever among everyday Americans in the GOP.
In a massive win for the former president, the Washington Examiner reports that Republicans now consider Trump to be the best president ever — even over former President Ronald Reagan.
Trump bests Reagan in new poll
The development comes by way of a poll recently released by The Economist and YouGov. The survey was conducted during the Senate’s recent impeachment trial, which ended in an acquittal for Trump.
The pollsters reportedly asked Americans of all stripes who they consider to be the best president ever.
Winning out was Barack Obama, who got 18% support, just one percentage point more than Abraham Lincoln.
Trump came in third place overall, but among Republicans, a whopping 36% of respondents chose him as the best president in American history, the Examiner reported. Meanwhile, 11% of Republicans reportedly chose George Washington, 13% chose Lincoln, and 18% chose Ronald Reagan, long thought to be a GOP favorite.
Winning over the GOP
This isn’t the first time The Economist and YouGov have run this survey, but it is the first time Trump came out as No. 1 among the GOP. The pollsters reported:
In 2018, Republicans ranked Reagan first (36%), followed by Trump (10%). Now, the positions are reversed, with the percentage of Republicans who name Trump as the best President ever having tripled to 36%, twice the number who still choose Ronald Reagan (18%).
Other presidents to make the list were Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was named by 12% of overall respondents as the best president, and John F. Kennedy, who got 6%, according to the poll.
Of course, it’s always hard to trust the conclusions drawn by pollsters, but other surveys have similarly shown that Trump remains popular among Republicans. One poll released this week by Quinnipiac University, for example, found that 75% of Republicans want Trump to play a “prominent role” in the GOP going forward, the Washington Examnier noted.
Impeachment a boon for Trump?
Other surveys have shown Trump as the clear frontrunner for the Republican nomination for the White House in 2024, the Examiner notes.
It remains unclear whether Trump will run again, however. Speaking with Newsmax this week upon the death of his longtime friend Rush Limbaugh, the former president said “it’s too early to say” whether he’ll throw his hat in the ring.
“I won’t say yet [if I’m running again], but I have tremendous support, and I’m looking at poll numbers that are through the roof,” Trump said, according to The Hill. “I’m the only guy who gets impeached and my numbers go up.”
