House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is panicking as House Republicans are starting to ask hard questions about Pelosi’s role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
Several leading House Republicans are demanding Pelosi explain certain security decisions that were made leading up to the riot. Pelosi is trying to dodge the questions, and her office accused Republicans of trying to “deflect responsibility for the Capitol attack from Donald Trump,” Fox News reported.
A request for National Guard support on Jan. 4 was reportedly rejected, something that Pelosi likely would have had oversight on. Republicans want to know why that request was rejected and who was responsible.
Republicans may have found a smoking gun, and unless Pelosi has a good explanation for why the call for the National Guard was rejected, the implications of this news are huge.
In a letter to Pelosi authored by Reps. Rodney Davis (R-IL), Jim Jordan (R-OH), James Comer (R-KY), and Devin Nunes (R-CA), they asked, “When then-Chief Sund made a request for National Guard support on Jan. 4, why was that request denied? Did Sergeant-at-Arms Paul Irving get permission or instruction from your staff on Jan. 4 prior to denying Chief Sund’s request for the National Guard?”
Former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund resigned after the riot on Jan. 6, but it turns out the event may not have been his fault. Pelosi likely would have had a direct impact on the decision to accept or reject the call for the National Guard.
If Pelosi rejected the use of the National Guard, this entire scandal that she has attempted to lay at the feet of former President Donald Trump is largely her responsibility.
At worst, Pelosi knowingly left the Capitol vulnerable, hoping something would happen that she could weaponize against Trump and Republicans. At best, Pelosi made the wrong decision, but the severe lack of security that led to the riot is still her fault.
Never let a crisis go to waste
If it is revealed that Pelosi knowingly left the Capitol exposed to benefit from the resulting chaos, there must be a reckoning. Democrats dragged us through a second impeachment trial, and maybe it’s Pelosi’s time to be dragged in front of the Senate.
When former President Barack Obama’s Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste,” he spoke about the opportunities of the global recession. Speaker Pelosi may have taken his idea to the next level.
Leading up to the riot, it was clear that there would be a large protest, peaceful or otherwise, at the Capitol. Despite Trump’s calls for peaceful protests, it was clear that a large security force would be required to ensure any protest remained peaceful.
Pelosi could have had the National Guard in place to keep any protest by Trump supporters or anyone else strictly peaceful, but she didn’t. Until Pelosi explains herself, it is completely reasonable to say Pelosi saw a developing crisis and took advantage of it, and people died as a result.
