Police had only about 90 seconds to halt traffic onto Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge after hearing a warning that a container ship was about the hit the structure.
The police officers managed to stop the traffic flow coming from both directions, according to The Associated Press.
Six construction workers are still missing and are presumed dead. The search effort for them in the Patapsco River reportedly resumed Wednesday morning.
“We’re thankful that between the mayday and collapse that we had officials who were able to begin to stop the flow of traffic so more cars were not up on the bridge,” said Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, according to The Daily Beast.
Eight road crew members and their vehicles were already on the bridge and two were rescued.
The ship hit the bridge early Tuesday morning after losing power.
