Authorities in Arizona are on the lookout for a second suspect involved in an ambush shooting of two officers.
The shooting: The Department of Public Safety (DPS) detectives in Phoenix were reportedly on a stake-out on Thursday morning when a car (a silver Infiniti model G37) parked next to their unmarked vehicle and a shooter opened fire using an assault rifle.
The deputies were able to exit their vehicle and return fire and eventually arrested the shooter after the driver sped off and left the shooter behind. The suspect is still at large.
Neither the gunman nor the officers were injured.
“Had the trooper not had the wherewithal and the ability to quickly exit his vehicle and engage the suspect, undoubtedly, he would have been shot or killed,” said DPS Director Col. Heston Silbert, Fox News reported.
Silbert said the shooting was unprovoked.
“Our detectives were wearing police attires, easily identifiable as police officers. We’re here simply supporting another operation going on nearby,” said Capt. Jesse Galvez, according to FOX 10.
DPS identified the shooter as 17-year-old Luis German Espinoza Acuna.
AZDPS detectives seek public assistance locating this vehicle, believed to be a silver 2008-2013 Infinity model G-37 with custom wheels. It has a temporary plate & appears to have chipped paint below the license plate area. If seen, please call 9-1-1 immediately. pic.twitter.com/17xfuEp72S

The shooting triggered a “Blue Alert,” notification to the public “following a violent attack upon a law enforcement officer.”
“The goal of the Blue Alert is to protect the public and officers through efficient information dissemination and communication that results in quick and safe apprehension of suspect(s) when such attacks occur,” according to the DPS website.
That #BlueAlert you just got on your phone is connected with a shooting involving DPS troopers this morning. One suspect is on the loose. No troopers hurt.

The incident comes less than a week after two Los Angeles officers were shot in a similar unprovoked, ambush-style shooting.
Both officers were gravely injured but are expected to survive.
The shooter remains at large.
