Proposed Bill Would Pull Unemployment Benefits From Convicted Rioters

Washington, DC – Federal lawmakers are considering a bill that would ban rioters convicted of certain federal offenses from receiving unemployment benefits from the U.S. government.

Under the “Support Peaceful Protest Act,” rioters convicted of federal crimes during “demonstrations” would also be forced to pay “restitution to the appropriate Federal law enforcement agency in an amount that is equal to the cost of such policing activity,” according to the bill.

The legislation was introduced by U.S. Representative Jim Banks (R-Indiana) on Aug. 28, WBIR reported.

“Antifa thugs are descending on suffering communities, disrupting peaceful protests and leaving violence, looting and vandalism in their wake,” Banks said in a statement, according to KOMO.

He noted that Portland, Seattle, Milwaukee, and Kenosha have been turned into “warzones” due to the rioting, KOMO reported.

“Who knows which community is next?” Banks lamented.

He said that rioters should not benefit from the taxpayer-funded CARES Act.

“Due to enhanced federal benefits, taxpayers are giving wages to jobless rioters that are destroying our communities,” Banks said. “We need to cut them off from their funding and make them feel the full financial consequences of their actions.”

During an interview with “Fox & Friends,” Banks explained that he decided to sponsor the legislation after protesters harassed two of his elderly friends as they were leaving the White House after listening to President Donald Trump’s nomination acceptance speech, FOX News reported.

“When I saw this happen to friends of mine walking out of the White House on a historic night, they came to see the president, one of the best presidents in a lifetime speak at the White House, they never could have imagined what they would be met with when they left the White House that night,” he said during the interview.

“If this happened in a community in northeast Indiana, that Antifa thug would have been arrested and charged with assault and should be behind bars,” Banks said. “But they’re not because these big-city mayors are turning a blind eye to this type of violence.”

He said he then realized that taxpayers have unintentionally been paying rioters “to show up every single night and protest and cause violence in the streets” because of the “enhanced unemployment benefits that these people receive,” FOX News reported.

Banks said that rioters might think twice about destroying their communities if they know they could lose “their extra $600 a week.”

“They shouldn’t receive it any longer if they’re found guilty of causing violence and riots in the streets,” he insisted.
