Trump Campaign Asks Twitter To Mark Biden Coronavirus Ad As Manipulated Media. Twitter Refuses While Continuing To Label Trump Posts

The Trump campaign has reportedly asked Twitter flag a video posted on Joe Biden’s official account.

The video, posted on Biden’s official account on Tuesday afternoon, contrasts how Trump allegedly speaks in public versus in private but it includes misleading or out-of-context statements, such as the one where Trump ostensibly called the coronavirus a hoax.

“Donald Trump is not responsible for COVID-19, but he is responsible for his failed response and for lying to the American people,” reads the caption of the video.

“The coronavirus, and this is their new hoax,” Trump is heard saying in the video. The President made the remarks during a Feb. 28 campaign rally.

At the time, both Democrats and the media seized on this statement to attack Trump for supposedly calling the virus a hoax, but Trump explained he was referring to the media and how they covered his impeachment trial.

“I never said the pandemic was a Hoax! Who would say such a thing? I said that the Do Nothing Democrats, together with their Mainstream Media partners, are the Hoax. They have been called out & embarrassed on this, even admitting they were wrong, but continue to spread the lie!” Trump tweeted in April.

Biden posted a similarly manipulated version of the same video in early March that got Four Pinocchios from a Washington Post fact-checker.

“This is a clear example of deceptive editing, specifically what we label ‘omission,’” the WaPo fact-check said.

But after Biden re-posted the video on Tuesday, the Trump campaign asked Twitter to flag it as manipulated media, as the company has done with multiple manipulated videos and other supposedly misleading content by Trump and his allies over the past few months.

In a statement to Fox News, Twitter said it will not be labeling the video as manipulated content.

The video from Tuesday also shows Trump allegedly calling the virus a “plague” and a “killer” in private, when the President actually made the remarks in an on-record interview with the Washington Post’s Bob Woodward and he has repeatedly used the terms “plague” and “killer” to refer to the virus in public.

Trump campaign spokesman Matt Wolking told Fox News, “Joe Biden relies on lies and fabrications and doctored videos to attack President Trump’s phenomenal handling of the deadly virus unleashed by China. Slow Joe can’t name a single thing he would have done differently if he had been president, other than refusing to restrict travel from China, which would have resulted in more dead Americans.”
