LA Sheriff Alex Villanueva Challenges Lebron James To Match Reward Money For Gunman Who Ambushed Deputies

The Los Angeles County sheriff on Monday issued a challenge to LeBron James to match and double the money reward to find the gunman who shot two deputies over the weekend.

The story: Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva made the challenge during an interview with KABC Radio on the John Phillips Show on Monday. He challenged the Los Angeles Lakers star to contribute to the reward the county is offering for information about the suspect who shot and critically injured two deputies.

Villanueva said the current reward is $175,000 after two individuals donated $75,000 to add to the $100,000 offered by the county. The Sherrif cited LeBron’s remarks about race relations and law enforcement.

His remarks: “This challenge is to Lebron James. I want you to match that and double that reward,” Villanueva said. “I know you care about law enforcement. You expressed a very interesting statement about your perspective on race relations and on officer-involved shootings and the impact that it has on the African-American community.

“And I appreciated that. But likewise, we need to appreciate that respect for life goes across all professions,” he continued. “Let’s see what he does. I’ll be very curious to see what his response is, if any.”

As of early Tuesday, LeBron still hasn’t responded to the challenge.

How we got here: Over the weekend two deputies were shot in what the police described as an ambush. A video of the incident showed a suspect approaching a police vehicle, where the two deputies were sitting, and opening fire into the care, then running away.

The deputies sustained multiple gunshot wounds and underwent surgeries. The suspect is still at large and a motive still hasn’t been determined.

James has been one of the most outspoken professional athletes about social justice issues, including racism and police brutality. He has repeatedly condemned police-involved shootings of black people. Following the death of George Floyd, he posted the following message on Instagram.
