Facebook Deletes Posts Blaming Activist Groups For Oregon Wildfires

Facebook has begun removing posts on the platform that link wildfires in the state of Oregon to activists groups, the company announced Sunday.

The announcement was made by Andy Stone, a spokesman for the company. He said that Facebook decided to take down such posts after law enforcement said the claims are “forcing local fire and police agencies to divert resources from fighting the fires and protecting the public.”

Until now, Facebook only added fact-check labels on posts suggesting an extremist group was responsible for one of the fires.

How we got here: Devastating wildfires are currently raging across the West Coast, including several major fires in Oregon that forced at least 500,000 people to flee Portland. Shortly after, rumors started circulating on social media about who or what started the blaze, some saying the fires had been intentionally started by either far-left or far-right groups.

Law enforcement officials have put out several statements disproving these claims. In one post, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said “our 9-1-1 dispatchers and professional staff are being overrun with requests for information and inquiries on an UNTRUE rumor that six Antifa members have been arrested for setting fires in Douglas County, Oregon. THIS IS NOT TRUE!”

Remember when we said to follow official sources only. Remember when we said rumors make this already difficult incident…

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in Jackson County, Ore., publish a similar message.

The FBI Portland Division also said in a statement that rumors about extremists starting fires in the state are untrue.
