Bizarre video footage captured the moment three East African runners appeared to wave a Chinese athlete ahead of them during the Beijing Half Marathon on Sunday, allowing him to win first place.
Chinese distance runner He Jie crossed the finish line a mere second ahead of Ethiopian Dejene Hailu Bikila and Kenyans Robert Keter and Willy Mgnangat, video taken during the final hundred yards of the race revealed.
Footage of the strange race’s final moments shows the three African runners clumped together, seemingly slowing down on purpose.
One of the African runners appears to signal for the other two to hold back and let the Chinese runner move forward.
All three African runners don’t appear to be even trying to win the race, as they just jog along together, allowing He to remain ahead of them.
According to a translation tool, the following post reads:
On April 14, the Beijing Half Marathon was suspected of match-fixing, which aroused public doubts. In the video, in the last few hundred meters of the race, Chinese athlete He Jie was originally behind, but one of the three foreign athletes turned around and waved his hand, apparently signaling He Jie to overtake, and then signaled his teammates to slow down. In the end, He Jie completed the overtaking in tacit understanding and won the championship with a one-second advantage.
This dramatic scene has aroused public doubts.
He Jie is currently a member of the Chinese men’s marathon national team, the champion of the Hangzhou Asian Games, and the men’s national record holder.
