Championing reparations meant a different tact for one Texas lawmaker regarding black people and taxes.
Freshman Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett representing parts of Dallas and Tarrant counties has made waves during her short tenure by treating congressional hearings as spectacles. Recently, she took her showmanship to “The Black Lawyers Podcast” where she explored the idea of exempting black Americans from taxes before offering a candid omission on why that wouldn’t be the best path.
“Just this past week I saw, I don’t remember which celebrity, but it was actually a celebrity, and I was like, I don’t know that that’s not necessarily a bad idea, but I’d have to think it through a lot,” she began in a clip circulating social media. “One of the things that they propose is black folk not have to pay taxes for a certain amount of time.”
Before host Jehan Carter would agree with Crockett, the demographic “aren’t really paying taxes in the first place,” the congresswoman lauded the idea, “Because then again, that puts money back in your pocket.”

“But at the same time, it may not be as objectionable to some people about actually giving out dollars,” she continued in favor of the scheme before suggesting it wouldn’t suffice. “But obviously, then you start dealing with the different tax brackets and things like that, and that’s one of the reasons that, you know, we argue that reparations make sense because so many black folks — not only do you owe for the labor that was stolen, killed and all the other things, right? — but the fact is, we end up being so far behind.”
“If you do the no tax thing, for people that are already say struggling and aren’t really paying taxes in the first place-” expressed Crockett before Carter cut in, “It doesn’t really matter to them. They may want those checks like they got during COVID.”
The conversation came only a few weeks after former MSNBC host Tiffany Cross added to the leftist push toward reparations when she reacted to a claim from actor Terrence Howard that his years of not paying taxes were tied to his view that it was “immoral” to tax descendants of slaves.
“This brother was making a legitimate point. We have never been paid,” said Cross on the “Native Land Podcast,” before adding, “We have never had any reparations. We’ve never seen the benefits.”
With reparations committees being formed throughout the country in Democratic strongholds proposing handouts ranging from millions to trillions of dollars either through direct cash infusions or favorable perks, Crockett had made other candid remarks about the thinking of black voters as it pertained to the 2024 presidential election.
As the GOP looks to make inroads with the black community heading into the fall and beyond, Crockett had gone on record in November suggesting to CNN’s Dana Bast that President Joe Biden’s own dropping poll numbers extended from black voters “not understanding exactly how any of this works.”
“Perception is reality, and so when you look at the data that was provided in this poll, it talks about how people feel, and when people decide whether they’re going to the poll or not going to the poll it’s all about how you feel in that moment,” she said, “and so while the facts may not align with their feelings, their feelings are dictating their reality.”
“Their reality is that they said that they feel better or they felt better when Trump was in office. But we’ve been trying to push back. We’ve got some very popular African-American artists that are out here saying things like ‘oh, I got checks when Trump was in office, and I want those checks again,’ not understanding that they really came from Congress,” continued the lawmaker.
“So we’ve got a couple of things the perception issue, and then we also have an issue as it relates to civics in this country and people not understanding exactly how any of this works,” contended Crockett.
Her most recent statement was met with questions about her own understanding as others suggested, “Perhaps we should check her taxes.”
Perhaps we should check her taxes.

My brain is hurting even listening to such non-sense.
This person is in Congress, let that sink in.— floridanow1 (@floridanow1) April 9, 2024
I cannot abide this woman. She clearly has a sense of entitlement. DEI was the worst policy ever introduced to America.

I think none of us should be paying taxes… Biden is wasting all our tax money in illegal immigrants, overseas war spending and canceling college debt.
