Once again, some House Republicans are using their influence and power to oust the Speaker, setting the stage for another possible dramatic shift in GOP power in the lower chamber.
Recently, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) filed a motion to have Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) removed from the speakership as a “rebuke” of his decision to support a bipartisan spending bill.
According to The Hill, the White House recently took a shot at House Republicans after being asked about a possible new round of House Republican Speaker drama.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre assured the reporter that the Biden administration would not insert itself into the unfolding drama.
What did she say?
Jean-Pierre downplayed the situation from the White House’s standpoint.
“We’ve always been very clear. We are not going to get in the middle of what’s going on in House leadership,” Jean-Pierre said at a briefing. “The president’s been very clear, he’s going to continue to focus on the American people.”
“We’re just not going to speak to what’s going on with the leadership,” KJP added. “I guess, you know, grab your popcorn, sit tight, watch what’s happening.”
The White House spoke on the matter just days after Greene filed a motion to vacate, which is the same procedure that was successfully used against former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
The Georgia Republican spoke on the matter, explaining in a post on X why she chose to file the motion.
“The ‘Republican-controlled’ House just passed a $1.2 trillion spending bill that doesn’t secure our border, but funds full term abortion and transgender ideology on our youth. I filed a Motion to Vacate because the House needs a Speaker who’s able to win for Republicans and our constituents,” she wrote.
Social media responds
Many across social media were not thrilled with Greene’s motion to vacate Johnson from the speakership.
“You’re destroying our majority and removing the most conservative Speaker in decades. We stand with @SpeakerJohnson!” one X user wrote.
Another X user wrote, “Well, we see now who really controls the house and it’s certainly not the Republican majority. The #RepublicanMajority has lost all respect, credibility with and confidence of (collectively and individually) your constituents. You all can now walk down your hall of shame.”
Only time will tell if Republicans have to endure another dramatic circus of changing out the Speaker, this time during a critical election year.
