Prosecutors in Manhattan asked Thursday for a month-long delay of their hush-money case against former President Donald Trump, less than two weeks before the Republican presidential candidate was set to go to trial.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg agreed to the 30-day adjournment so that the ex-president’s lawyers can sift through thousands of pages of newly disclosed evidence from U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Damian Williams.
Trump’s trial on charges of covering up payments to porn star Stormy Daniels to silence her story about an alleged affair had been set to start on March 25.
Bragg’s office announced that Williams has handed over 31,000 pages of “new evidence” related to the case on Wednesday, and is expected to release more documents next week.
Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York had already opted out of charging Trump over the hush money allegations in 2019, and the Federal Election Commission also tossed its investigation into the matter in 2021.
Some conservatives are speculating on social media that the documents being handed over by the SDNY, who had tossed the earlier case, may actually benefit Trump.
In a Truth Social post Thursday afternoon, Trump shared a statement from his campaign communications director:
President Trump and his counsel have been consistent and steadfast that this case has no basis in law or fact, and should be dismissed. Today, after conceding serious discovery violations by his office, the Manhattan DA agreed to an adjournment. We will continue to fight to end this Hoax, and all of the other Crooked Joe Biden – directed Witch Hunts, once and for all.

Journalist Adam Klasfeld shared the following:
On Manhattan DA’s consent to an up-to-30-day adjournment: They say they asked the U.S. Attorney’s office for the documents “more than a year ago,” which that office “previously declined to provide.” —Then USAO dumped ~73K pages earlier this month; then ~31K pages “yesterday”; and signaled another batch “next week,” on the eve of trial. https://documentcloud.org/documents/24481447-20240314-peoples-notice.
Context: The DA blames Trump’s team for this turn of events. “We note that the timing of the current production of additional materials from the USAO is a function of defendant’s own delay.” The defense subpoenaed the USAO again on Jan. 18, 2024 — and “then consented to repeated extensions.”

Journalist Anna Bower wrote:
According to the motion, the USAO on March 4 began handing over 73,000 pages of additional records in response to a January subpoena from the defense. While only a fraction of those materials were relevant to the hush money case, the office produced 31,000 more pages yesterday.
Bragg says that the belated production of additional materials from the USAO is “a function of the defendant’s own delay.”
Trump waited until January 2024 to subpoena the records and then consented to multiple extensions of the deadline to produce the documents, per filing.

So, @TheJusticeDept refused to prosecute Trump for this scheme because he was president, although DOJ did prosecute his lawyer Michael Cohen. Now we learn that DOJ sat on documents they should have turned over to Manhattan DA Bragg long ago. Sad.https://t.co/8Ney2sI9nl
