(NewsNation) — Senate Republicans are making another push to bring up the Laken Riley Act, which has passed the House.
“We want this to be law,” Sen. Ted Budd, R-N.C., told “Elizabeth Vargas Reports” on Thursday.
“This is about preventing tragedies. We want that situation to never happen again.”
The bill calls on the Department of Homeland Security to detain immigrants in the country illegally when they’re arrested for “minor” crimes such as theft or burglary.
In the House, 37 Democrats voted for the bill, but Budd says Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is blocking a Senate vote.
At a Capitol Hill news conference Thursday, Budd said the act deserves a Senate vote.
“The American people deserve to know who stands on the side of preventing tragedies,” he said.
