Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’s former romantic partner and colleague, Nathan Wade, stepped down from the Trump case on Friday, resulting in a political win for former President Donald Trump. Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee decided on Friday that Willis could continue working on the Trump case as long as Wade was no longer involved or if he chose to resign voluntarily.
Wade wrote a letter to Willis stating that he would resign from the case:
“Although the court found that “the defendants failed to meet their burden of proving that the District Attorney acquired an actual conflict of interest,” I am offering my resignation in the interest of democracy, in dedication to the American public, and move this case forward as quickly as possible.”

Willis accepted his resignation, stating that Wade served with “professionalism and dignity you have shown over the last 865 days, as you have endured threats against you and your family, as well as unjustified attacks in the media and in court on your reputation as a lawyer.”
McAfee’s ruling on Friday determined that the previous romantic relationship between the two individuals did not create any “real conflict” that would necessitate Willis to step down from the case. McAfee further stated that the former lovers simply displayed an “appearance of impropriety,” indicating that Willis should recuse herself if Wade remains involved in the case.
