NCA NewsWire reports the attack on prominent Sydney Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel, who has a large following on social media, has triggered riots, forcing a major hospital into lockdown.
Three other men were stabbed during the live streamed service.
The chaotic event, which happened just two days after six people were stabbed to death in a Sydney mall, took place at Wakeley’s Christ The Good Shepherd Church at about 7.10pm Monday.
“He’s a f**king dog,” one man can be heard saying in the video now circulating social media.
Police arrested the alleged attacker, the outlet stated, but faced difficulty controlling the chaos at the scene, as angry crowds of about 2,000 people attacked police vehicles.
The Daily Mail reported that outside the church, outnumbered groups of police officers huddled together as bottles and bricks were hurled at them.
Cheers erupted from some in the crowd as car windows were smashed. Social media footage depicted a ladder being used to break down a window of the church.
Crowds also gathered at Liverpool Hospital after some of the injured from the church incident were taken there for treatment.
The Mail highlighted that immediately following the attack, footage surfaced showing the alleged attacker being subdued on his front by at least three individuals, including a police officer, while he smiles and seemingly mocks his captors.
One man, with blood visible on his jeans, can be seen sitting with his legs straddling the alleged attacker’s head. “People are praying and you come and do this?” he says while lightly slapping the attacker’s cheek.
A police officer quickly interjects: “Stop, just let go, please. You’re going to make it worse.”
The cameraman then says, “You’re a f***ing idiot, you’re going to cop it,” after the alleged attacker appears to laugh while being subdued.
“You think they’ll hurt my brother?” the smiling stabbing suspect says in response as police officers try to usher the crowd of onlookers away.
The arrested man has since been taken to an “undisclosed location,” according to police reports. The church has also confirmed Father Isaac Royel was among the injured in a statement.
“We ask for your prayers at this time,” the statement read. “It is the bishop’s and father’s wishes that you also pray for the perpetrator. We also kindly ask anyone at the church premises to leave in peace.”
Police report that none of the injuries sustained by the bishop, father, or two other individuals are life-threatening.
“A large police response is underway and the public is urged to avoid the area. More information will be provided once it becomes available,” officers attached to Fairfield City Police Area Command said following the event.
