Philadelphia officers hit with bricks, Molotov cocktails as unrest continues | LIVE COVERAGE

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The looting continued Sunday after a peaceful protest of the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis Saturday in Center City Philadelphia turned violent with fires set and storefronts smashed.

Here are the latest updates:

6:30 p.m.: Officers hit with bricks, Molotov cocktails
Brian Abernathy, Philadelphia’s managing director, says officers have been hit with bricks, rocks and Molotov cocktails during the unrest on Sunday.

“In the area of 52nd and Market streets alone we had five officers injured, four police vehicles were burned and officers were hit with bricks, rocks, and Molotov cocktails.

Managing Director Brian Abernathy said multiple officers were injured and multiple people were arrests as a second day of violence and looting erupted in Philadelphia.

Officials say National Guard troops are expected to arrive in Philadelphia on Sunday night. City officials say the guard members will act in a support role for law enforcement.

A total of 600 guardsmen were activated for support roles across the state by Gov. Tom Wolf.

6:20 p.m.: Philadelphia officials provide update on unrest in city
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney says all city government operations will be closed on Monday, June 1.except for public safety departments

“Obviously city services have been somewhat curtailed because of COVID-19, but for tomorrow June 1 all city operations except for public safety departments will be closed,” said Kenney. “We’re taking these steps out of abundance of caution. We want to ensure that our first responders have full access to all parts of the city, and all neighborhoods.”

While a curfew is now in effect until 6 a.m., Kenney urged residents to go home.

“Go home, stay home and stay safe. By staying home you’ll protect yourself your loved ones and you’ll protect our courageous first responders,” said Kenney.

Mayor Jim Kenney spoke on May 31, 2020 after two days of looting and violence in the city.

5:30 p.m. : SEPTA will shut down all service on all modes of travel at 6 p.m. tonight, Sunday, May 31. Service will remain suspended until at least 6 a.m. on Monday, June 1.
