Basketball fans will be concerned to learn that one of the all-time greats, Hall of Famer and Georgetown University coach Patrick Ewing has been hospitalized after testing positive for COVID-19.
Ewing is still a relatively young man at 57 years old and is in excellent shape, so it was rather stunning to hear that he has been hospitalized.
‘Virus is serious’
After being admitted to the hospital, Ewing made a statement to stress the seriousness of the pandemic.
“I have tested positive for COVID-19,” he stated, adding, “This virus is serious and should not be taken lightly. I want to encourage everyone to stay safe and take care of yourselves and your loved ones. Now more than ever, I want to thank the health care workers and everyone on the front lines.”
It has not been made clear yet how serious his condition is. Ewing, however, stated, “I’ll be fine and we will all get through this.”
Ewing is currently serving at the head coach of his alma mater, Georgetown University, where he had just completed his third season in that position. The university confirmed that no one else in the basketball program has tested positive, ESPN reported Friday.
When Ewing attended Georgetown, he was a star on one of the most dominant college basketball teams of all time.
During his four years at Georgetown, the school reached the NCAAB championship game three times, winning it all in 1984.
Ewing was designed the 16th Greatest College Player of All Time in 2014 by ESPN. After college, he was drafted by the New York Knicks in the first round of the NBA draft.
While the Knicks never won the championship, Ewing would solidify himself very early on as a dominant force in the sport. He was named the NBA Rookie of the Year as well as the NBA All-Rookie Team in 1986.
Ewing left the Knicks after the 1999-2000 season to play for both the Seattle Supersonics and Orlando Magic before retiring as a player after the 2001-02 season.
He immediately changed gears and began coaching at the NBA level, serving as an Assistant Coach on four different teams before being named the Georgetown Head Coach in 2017.
