AfD calls for end of sanctions against Russia amid Corona’s economic fallout

Russia should also be reinstated in existing transnational bodies and associations such as the G7 alliance. The party intends to submit an application approved by the AfD Group’s foreign policy working group to the parliament in a timely manner.

The reasoning is that the German economy will suffer losses of up to eight billion euros annually as a result of the sanctions. At the same time, the German economy is facing a slump due to the Corona crisis. Economic output is expected to decline by five percent or even more in the current year.

The parliamentary group therefore suggests: “The quickest possible lifting of the Russia sanctions would be a cost-neutral and effective economic stimulus package in times of the corona crisis.”

In addition, the AfD calls for German-Russian cooperation in research and development to be promoted and expanded. As an example of such a cooperation, the parliamentary group cites the cooperation of Russian and Japanese scientists who jointly developed a mobile kit for corona tests, which was already being mass produced in April and had been pre-ordered by numerous clinics, including in Austria.

The AfD parliamentary group in the Bundestag had already expressed an end of sanctions last year. The punitive measures go back to the annexation of Crimea by Russia. In March 2014, around 40 countries, including all EU member states and the USA, had therefore imposed sanctions on the Russian Federation. They were further tightened up in 2014.

Since then, strict financial sanctions against a number of Russian banks and industrial groups have been in force.
