The FBI field office in Houston, Texas on Tuesday, March 19, announced the arrest of three boys dubbed the “Little Rascals” for allegedly robbing a bank last week.
On March 14, the FBI posted surveillance photos of the boys, who were estimated to be between 14 and 18 years old, following a robbery at the Wells Fargo bank branch at 10261 North Freeway, Knewz.com has learned.
On Tuesday, the FBI confirmed the boys, ages 11, 12 and 16, had been arrested and charged with robbery by threat.
“Because they are juveniles, their names and no additional details will be released,” the FBI said.
The boys’ ages made the incident unique, according to a law analyst.
“The age of the younger two, that’s unusual for a bank robbery,” Mike Schneider, a retired juvenile district court judge, told ABC13. “It’s one of the first times I’ve seen that.”
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the boys passed a threatening note to a teller. It was believed that they were armed, but they didn’t show a weapon during the heist, in which they got away with an unknown amount of money.
Once photos of the boys were released, two parents identified them. Meanwhile, the third boy was reprimanded for a fight and identified before being taken into custody.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, they recovered an unidentified weapon and a “distinctive” item identified in the photos.
“I was thinking either this was very low in sophistication or maybe an adult had something to do with this. That is not uncommon. Because kids have a punishment that is less severe, it is not uncommon for adult offenders to get them to commit crimes,” Schneider said.
Police didn’t say whether anyone else was involved.
An attorney told ABC13 that the boys could face probation until they turn 18 or juvenile prison until they turn 19. The 16-year-old could be tried as an adult, but the attorney said it’s unlikely.
The Little Rascals is a 1994 film that follows a rag-tag group of boys, based on Our Gang, a series of short films dating back to the 1920s that were later syndicated for TV under the title “The Little Rascals.”
