If Donald Trump wins this upcoming election, there is little doubt that he will be appointing at least one Supreme Court justice, possibly as many as four.
If he wins and takes office, Justice Sotomayor will be 70, so her seat could easily be vacated during his term.
Justice Thomas is 75, Justice Alito is 73, and Justice Roberts is 69, so all of them may decide to step down during the term, so Trump is preparing a list.
My Justices
My thinking is that both Justice Thomas and Justice Alito will retire when a Republican takes over the White House again.
Neither of them will want to risk a liberal taking their seat, so Trump would surely be appointing two new justices.
Roberts is a wild card because I do not believe he is a fan of Trump’s, and he may actually want to see a liberal take his place to give the court more balance, so he could hold out beyond Trump’s term.
And, as I stated, Sotomayor, who is currently 69 and has some health issues, would be 70 when Trump took office, so there is a chance she could be leaving soon as well, which is why liberals want her to step down now.
Trump wants to be ready for this, so he announced this week that he will have a list of about 20 nominees that he will put before the Senate to confirm if he gets into office.
Trump stated, “I’m going to be putting together a list of judges — great judges — a list of about 20. I think it’s important to reveal who your Supreme Court justices will be.
“There are people who say the list helped me win the election last time.
“Frankly, I think Biden should be doing the same thing.”
Trump is right about the impact of the Supreme Court on the election, as it polled very highly for voters in the 2016 presidential election.
With Trump now holding significant leads in every swing state, the only obstacle he really has is his federal indictments and somehow, he continues to get them pushed back.
