This is Why Republicans are Voting Against Trump’s National Emergency

President Trump wants to declare a national emergency to push through funding to build the border wall.

The fact that he’s facing such opposition to wall is a subversion of the will of the people, who voted Trump into the White House partially on his promise to curb the flow of illegal immigration.

And most congressional Republicans support Trump in this policy, even in his plan for a comprehensive border wall.

And yet, some of those very Republicans have voted to strip Trump of the authority to declare this particular national emergency. The House just passed a bill to block Trump, and it was supported by 13 Republicans.

That bill will now move to the Senate, where Republicans still hold a majority, but at least a few of them plan to vote with the Democrats on this issue.

Sen. Thom Tillis (NC) explained why he and several other Senate Republicans will vote in favor of the bill blocking Trump’s national emergency.

“As a U.S. senator, I cannot justify providing the executive with more ways to bypass Congress,” Tillis wrote in The Washington Post. “As a conservative, I cannot endorse a precedent that I know future left-wing presidents will exploit to advance radical policies that will erode economic and individual freedoms.”

The thing is, a lot of average conservatives agree with this line of thinking.

Most back Trump on immigration, but fear that whatever maverick steps he takes now will be echoed by future Democratic presidents. And, if the line-up of Democratic presidential candidates for 2020 is any indication, we could have a real whacko in the White House in the future.
