A 4.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the Northeast Friday morning, shaking buildings from Philadelphia to New Jersey to New York City to Connecticut to Westchester, New York.
The earthquake was centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport are all on a ground stop while runways are inspected for damage.
The epicenter of the quake was reportedly near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey.
So far, no reports of damages or injuries have been reported, but many people are ‘shaken’ over the unexpected shaking, which was felt across the entire northeast, including the New York City area, Long Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Vermont, and even Washington, D.C.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on X, “A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit west of Manhattan and has been felt throughout New York. My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day.”

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced, “Our region just experienced an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.7, with an epicenter near Readington in Hunterdon County. We have activated our State Emergency Operations Center. Please do not call 911 unless you have an actual emergency.”

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro announced, “A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit New Jersey and was felt in parts of Pennsylvania. My team and @PEMAHQ are actively monitoring the situation and in contact with counties on any damage. We will keep Pennsylvanians updated.”

Transit systems are being temporary halted, pending inspections for potential damage.
Rail service system-wide is subject to up to 20-minute delays in both directions due to bridge inspections following an earlier earthquake.
