Police in Germany have thwarted a major bomb plot by radical militants linked to the Islamic State to ‘kill as many infidels’ as possible, prosecutors said.
Three men were arrested on Tuesday in Offenbach, not far from Frankfurt, on suspicion of plotting a bomb attack for the Islamic State militant group. The suspects wanted to murder as many ‘infidels’ as possible in an attack that was planned to take place in the Rhine-Main region, the Daily Mail reports.
The primary suspect arrested during the raid is a 24-year-old German of Macedonian origin who wanted to manufacture explosives and who had previously attempted to purchase a weapon online. The man’s two suspected accomplices are both Turkish nationals, aged 22 and 121.
Frankfurt prosecutor Nadja Niesen said that the suspects are believed to have told others that they were Islamic State supporters.
On Tuesday morning, around 170 police officers conducted raids on three apartments in Offenbach and detained the radical Islamists, who were already on the radar of authorities.
Bomb-making substances and equipment were discovered during raids of the suspects’ homes. Police also secured written documents and electronic data, Niesen said.
“The intervention occurred in time to prevent a concrete threat,” Niesen stated, saying that the three men hoped to kill “as many people, so-called unbelievers, as possible.”
On Wednesday, a judge will decide whether to issue an arrest warrant and order pretrial detention for the three men.
