Nearly all Republican members of the U.S. Senate are calling upon Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to hold a trial on the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
The Hill reports that the Republicans made the call in a letter that they sent to Mayorkas this past week.
This comes after Mayorkas was impeached by the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives for his failure to address the southern border crisis, where record levels of illegal immigration continue to take place under the Biden administration.
According to the process set forth in the U.S. Constitution, the House votes on whether to not to impeach a government official, and then the U.S. Senate holds a trial to determine whether or not to remove the official from office. The problem, though, is that Schumer is trying to protect Mayorkas by not holding the trial.
The letter
It was signed by 43 Senate Republicans, who are led by U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC).
The Republicans, in the letter, argued that Schumer has a “constitutional responsibility to adjudicate the House of Representatives’ impeachment of” Mayorkas.
“Since 1797, twenty-one individuals have been impeached by the House of Representatives. Trials were held in every single instance, except once when an impeached judge resigned from office before trial commenced,” the Republicans wrote.
Six Senate Republicans did not sign on to the letter. It will come as no surprise to conservatives to learn that the six individuals include U.S. Sens. Mitt Romney (R-UT), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Susan Collins (R-ME).
It will come as more of a surprise that the letter was also not signed by U.S. Sens. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) and Rand Paul (R-KY)
Could Republicans get Democratic support?
It appears that this could be a possibility.
Just The News reports, “Montana Democratic Sen. Jon Tester this week pressed Department of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas to take concrete steps to secure the southern border amid an ongoing surge in illegal crossings.”
Whether this means, though, that Tester would support the impeachment of Mayorkas is unclear.
It is worth pointing out that Tester is up for reelection in 2024, and it would be an understatement to say that he is facing a difficult reelection. This probably explains why he is trying to move himself to the center of the aisle by appearing tough on Mayorkas for his border failures.
Schumer, at the time of this writing, has yet to respond to the Republicans’ letter.
